I love the Harlequin Romance line. Unfortunately, for the past few months, even year, most of the stories I picked up were kind of disappointing to me. I haven't found any that really made me say "Good story" at the end. But finally, here's a new Christmas story that would be make you teary-eyed and bring a smile to your face during the holiday season.
Jarrett McKane owned the apartment building Mia Saunders and her elderly friends currently lived. Now, he wants them off his land in order to build a factory. Mia wasn't going to let some businessman come in and call the shots without a fight. She had enough of that growing up. They soon found themselves working closely together through the holiday season and soon found themselves also falling as well.
I love the emotional pull of this story. The heroine, who had a rough childhood, really made you sympathize for her. I shed a couple of tears when she talked about the death of her brother and after the birth of her child. There were a few parts more but I won't ruin it. Despite being emotionally scarred, she was strong and straightforward but didn't allow her pride get in the way of asking for help when she needed it. There aren't many heroines in romance novels that I admire but I respected Mia for not playing games. No wonder the hero fell for her. I love the reformation of the hero. Jarrett had the appearance of resisting to change but the author made him change gradually without all the macho attitude that some heroes get at the end of most books. He acted like a scrooge but underneath, he really needed someone to bring out the protective side of him. I found the plot of the story moving without breaking pace. Good, simple dialogue. I read similar stories before, but somehow, Patricia Thayer wove this story perfectly. On a side note, this is a clean romance.
The only reason I gave this a 4 stars is because I probably wouldn't read this again. Not for awhile anyways, but I would definitely keep this one in my collection.
