Pokemon X & Pokemon Y Official Guidebook Review

Title: Pokemon X & Pokemon Y Official Guidebook
Publisher: The Pokemon International Company
ISBN: 9780804161992
My Rating: 3 4 out of 5 stars

Despite its major fault of not having a pokedex, this is actually a pretty beautiful and useful guide.  I'll be honest, like most of you, I bought this guide for the pokedex.  And unfortunately, it doesn't have one.  What?!  However, I indeed had other reasons for wanting this guide - maps, pokemon locations and a referral guide to days you can get free things.  It does all that except give a week calendar that I liked in the Pokemon Black & White guide.  You have to keep track of the days on your own.  Another con was the maps are so tiny.  You can't get all the details.

Like all guides, the beginning section goes over the basics, like using pokeballs, shops and so on.  Since the 3DS game had a major overhaul, it might be a good idea to check it out.  Then we get to the walkthrough.  The walkthrough was extremely helpful.  It tells you step-by-step of what to do in each area, like the available pokemon, their rarity, maps, etc.  So, if you don't want any spoilers, I recommend playing through a section first and then going back for any loose ends.  And the guide ends with going over the extras, like the PSS, berry farming and pokemon-amie.  As much as I like the hardcover and pocket size, it is harder to keep the book open to a page, unlike a full size guide.  I;m concerned I'm going to end up destroying the spine.  The pages are glossy.  Slightly thicker than a standard guide's page.  However, it does get wrinkly pretty quickly after flipping through a couple of times.  The print is a decent reading size.  The images are sharp and clean.

As bonuses, you get a loose map of the Kalos Region and a screen wipe.  These two are neat things to have, considering the price.  Is it unique or useful?  Not really.  Do I really need 2 of the same map?  There are also a lot of cute artworks dispersed throughout the book.  All in all, it delivered as advertised, so I can't complain.  If you are looking for the Pokedex, don't get this book!  I have been using the internet to get my information.  However, I do hope that The Pokemon Company will considering releasing a Pokedex in the very near future.

Updated 10/22/13 - Okay.  There are a few more things missing.  I finally beat the Elite Four and the Champion and the guide sadly, does skip the city that opens up after winning.  Really?  Despite being a post game event, it should've been consider part of the walkthrough.  It's really going to be silly adding this information in the second book that was suppose to be dedicated to the pokedex.  Despite its pretty front, the crucial information that gamers need are not there.  So, I'm lowering my grade to 3 stars after finishing the game.
