Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart Review

Since Amazon won't let me post this review and I hate to waste the review I spent a lot of time on, I decided to post after a hiatus of sorts.  I just got lazy with posting.  In any case, here is a new game review.  Hope it helps someone buy a new game.

Platform: Playstation Vita
My Playtime: 300+ hours
Genre: Strategy Turn Based RPG
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Honestly, I’m not a fan of the Hyperdimension Neptunia series.  I love the story but I just couldn’t get the rhythm of the battle system.  I gave up on the series after playing the first one.  Now, this game was $5 digitally and I decided to give this series one more try.  Now after 300 hours of gameplay, I think can safely give my fair assessment.

Wondering why I played for 300 hours for about 3 months?  Besides the fact that I probably don’t have a life.  This is the main bad thing about this type of game.  If you are a completionist, this game will push you to your limit.  There were about 20 girls and each one has their own character challenge (there was about 20 attributes i.e. fighting alone, critical attacks, using items, counters, etc.) that needed to be maxed out.  Let me tell you, do you know how long it takes to counter over 80 enemies with all 20 girls with a 50% chance of actually countering?  It is nearly an impossible achievement.  Besides leveling up characters, there were “lily ranks” - the amount of affection between the girls.  This wasn’t so bad but this was the reason for all my hours.  To get 100% trophy, you need max affection for all the girls.

Anyways, besides my obsession for trophy collecting, there was a lot of good to the game.  This was a strategy/turn-based RPG.  My only comparison would be to Stella Glow’s (one of my favorite games).  The characters can move certain amount of squares in the grid and then be assigned an action.  When your team is done, it is the enemies turn to take action.  It is different from the original games.

The graphics were so cute and crisp.  Their designs were of the 3D chibi variety when they were in battle, but flat regular appearance during dialogue sequences.  Each character continued with the theme of being a parody of video game tropes.  There were a few fan-service images.  Nothing too bad.  The voice acting was good.  BGM was forgettable but good elevator music.  The only bad would be the repetitiveness of the battles.

If you like Stella Glow, you will like this game as well.  People who like the Neptunia series should get it for their collections.  However, the fighting system is different.  So be aware of that.  If you just want the story, it was possible to breeze through, but there were some boss battles that will be difficult without grinding.  I would recommend giving the game a try.  However, if you hate grinding and revisiting the same dungeons, it might not be for you.
