I've been only exposed to belly dancing 2 times. Once on a cruise when we stopped in Turkey. Another was at a Moroccan restaurant. And let's just say, I wasn't really impressed. But I know belly dancing can be awesome. So, my friend (who does and teach belly dance), my sister and I went to see it last night and man, were we impressed.
The Keswick Theatre is pretty old and the seats were not conducive in seeing over someone's head. The stage is pretty small. Since I've never seen a show before, I can't compare if the size of the stage affected the choreography. We were front and center, slightly towards the back. We had a decent view and close enough to catch the details.
First, I like to say all the girls in the cast were amazing. But there were a few highlights to this performance that I had to mention. My ultimate favorite dance was the one with the girl, Meera (who was dressed in purple most of the time) and the guy (the only one), Samir, were dancing together with the deity. It was exactly what you would see from a Bollywood movie. Second, they were so into it and so enthusiastic. Meera performed all her dances with precision and she was sooo into it; Mouthing the words to the songs to make it look like she was singing and dancing. Samir was absolutely awesome. My friend even thought he was amazing and she does not praise lightly when it comes to belly dancing. He danced without appearing too feminine. He was double jointed and performed these movements effortlessly. And my last mention would be the scarves dance performed by Petit Jamilla. It was beautiful and her timing was awe inspiring. I was sitting on the edge of seat, watching as she twirls with 5 scarves and another girl comes twirling by and throwing another scarf to her. Sabah did a breathtaking job with the birds dance. I didn't care too much for the "tribal girls" performances too much. It was a little boring for me. My sister liked it however. Their style of dance is more hip-hop belly dance. In essence, they all did an amazing job. Lasting 2 hours with a few minutes breaks in between dances. The music was upbeat and complemented with the dances. I loved the costumes. The dances were choreographed beautifully.
I say this was worth my $30. If they stop by again next year, we already decided we'll go again if we are able to. So, when you see their ad in your area newspaper, go see it. You won't regret it.
