Thor was an unexpected hit for me. I went into the theatre with low expectations and came out with a smile on my face. Great plot. Amazing casting. Stunning graphics. Amazing choreographed fight scenes. And a sweet romance. This movie is the movie to see. Official Site: http://thor.marvel.com/
In the past, Odin went to war with the Frost Giants in order to protect the 9 worlds. He was able to push them back and brought back peace. Fast forward a few decades, Thor, Odin’s son, was about to be crown king of Asgard but was interrupted when frost giants sneaked into the castle. Thor, with his friends, went to where the Frost giants live to give them a fight for daring to coming to his home. Unfortunately, they were outnumbered and Odin had to come rescue them. As punishment for his hotheaded, Odin sent Thor, stripped of his powers, to Earth to teach him humility.
Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, is amazingly hot. He took off his shirt off only once (to my disappointment) and what great eye candy. *sigh* The other actors and actresses in this movie were brilliant. They delivered their lines with deadpanned humor. At these parts, majority of the audience laughed. I was surprised to see Natalie Portman played Jane Porter. Her role was not so big in this movie but I hope the sequel put her in the forefront. The plot was great. Since I have never read a Thor comic, I'm not sure how close this is to the original storyline. If you are a purist, this might not be your cup of tea. But from what I studied, there is enough elements from the original comic that it does not totally ruin Thor. It was kind of predictable but there was enough of a twist at the end that it was not so clear cut. The only reason I did not give this a full 5 stars is because it felt a little rushed in part of the movie. Thor suddenly changed his attitude and demeanor so abruptly; I didn’t understand his swift change. I understand it’s due to the pacing but I would’ve have liked a snippet to smooth out the transition.
You don’t have to see this movie in 3D. It’s perfectly great without the extra headache. I know this is not the greatest recommendation but if you like Fantastic 4, then you will definitely love this. In general, this movie has a little of everything for everyone to enjoy. If you are expecting a riveting plot line, then maybe this isn’t for you. But in my opinion, this was a well balanced movie that is worth seeing. And it’s already on my list of movies to buy on DVD.
