Abby Gray have been mentally and physically abused all her life. However, Abby was determined to finally take back her life. If only her ex-boyfriend would just leave her alone. When her ex showed up at her workplace, Hunter Smith stepped in. Hunter normally don't rescue damsel-in-distresses but the waitress intrigued him. However, can two emotionally-damaged people find the power to overcome their past and seek their chance at love?
I had such a hard time getting into this book or even care what happened to the couple. Instead of reading like the usual romance, the tone came off as more of a self-help book. The writing was slightly clinical, dry, and lacked humor and atmosphere. I never really formed an attachment with either character. As individuals, their personalities were well-defined and how they overcame their pasts and realized where mistakes were made were believable. As the hero, Hunter I had to like and respect. On the other hand, Abby frustrated me. But by the end, I had to give her props for her decisions. However, as a couple, I found them lacking chemistry. They were a few scenes that showed their attraction but it felt forced and formulaic. It was like the author had to input these scenes to convince the readers that they were attracted and meant for each other. Didn't do it for me. I say they were more best friends than anything. Note: This is a clean romance.
Would I recommend? Not really. It lacked romance, humor, and an engaging plot line that made it hard to chug through in one sitting. However, if Abby's story of abuse and overcoming these trials hit a nerve with you, try it out. I did find Abby's reactions to be reasonable and inspiring. In the end though, this is a miss.
