Title: Playboy's Challenge

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I wanted to love it. I really did. But "Playboy's Challenge" lacked the depth, charm and humor of its predecessors. In the end though, it was a decent read. In the third installment in the Challenge series, we are introduced to Adam Sutherland, son of Ian and Jenny from "Rogue's Challenge", and to Deidra, daughter of Colin and Tuck from "Highlander's Challenge." I was really excited that we got a chance to revisit our favorite couples after all these years and now, we got a chance watch their children fall in love. Now, the plot was good and the writing was great, by being to the point and not being too verbose. And the action scenes were great and had me at the edge of my seat. However, the two problems were the lack of character development and the shallow interaction between the Adam and Deidra. I honestly don't know when they got a chance to fall in love and get to know one another. For half of the book, you have Adam nursing his "I'm-not-worth-anything" attitude and Deidra nursing her own "No-man-wants-me." Their characters didn't really endear themselves to me and pretty much acted like spoil children. They appeared more in lust than in love. I preferred the scenes with side characters. And when the ending was really ramping up, it blew by so quickly, it was over before it even started. But the ending was good.
This story had potential. But overall, the novel itself was too rushed that I couldn't like it much as I wanted to and felt hollow. A few more chapters would've really fleshed out the story, making it a tad stronger. But as is, I wouldn't be reading this one again. For readers who liked Jo Barrett's first two books, don't have too a high expectation. This was a great filler book to catch up with past characters. If you have not read the previous Challenge books, don't start here. There are few back references that were not explained fully here.
