Mr. Miracle Review

Title: Mr. Miracle
Author: Debbie Macomber
Publisher: Ballantine Books
ISBN: 978053391152
Website: http://www.ballantinebooks.com
My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Harry Mills, an angel given the ability to become human, believed his assignment was going to be a piece of cake.  Since he was practically an expert on humans, what could go wrong?  But studying humans and being human were two completely different things.  While battling his unexpected feelings and an adversarial dean, Harry has to guide Addie Folsom on the right path.  But with Addie and Erich fighting their feelings, Harry had his work cut out for him.

This was definitely not my favorite in the miracle series.  The plot and tone is pretty similar to Macomber’s previous novels.  But what made the story different was the fact that Harry Mills has been given the ability to be human and interact with his charges.  And I’ll be honest, our lady angels don’t have to worry about losing their jobs.  I had a hard time forming an affinity with him.  He felt too foolish for me to take seriously.  However, the mentor he was assigned, I liked.  I looked forward to her scenes.

Overall, I liked the characters.  Everyone had their quirks that made them interesting and wanted me to learn more about them.  However, you barely spend any time with them since the plot was so focused on Harry Mills and the French teacher.  I wanted to read a romance and I felt like that was an afterthought.  I would love to see Addie and Erich’s romance developed more, but it felt rushed as though the author just realized she was running out of pages.  I mean, Addie got over her emotional problems pretty quickly from just reading ‘The Christmas Carol’ and Christmas lights’ suddenly turning on at a climactic moment.  I just didn’t get when they fell in love with each other either.  You barely see Erich and his character development was terribly lacking.  It was huge disappoint since I kind of liked their hate/love relationship.

Honestly, there was no real substance to the book.  It spent so much time focusing on Harry and his learning to be human, that the original plot was tossed to the sidelines.  The tone and themes I liked.  The characters I liked. But this was a fluff piece compared to her previous novels.  This will definitely be a hit or miss. So, I would recommend borrowing this book, and not buying at its original price.

Note: I received this ARC from the Amazon Vine program for an honest review.
