Built to Last Review

Title: Built to Last
Author: Janice Kay Johnson
Line: Heartwarming
Publisher: Harlequin
ISBN: 9780373364398
Website: http://www.harlequin.com
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Jo Dubray was anti-marriage and anti-kids.  Her career was the main focus and love would be an unwelcome distraction.  But when she moved into a new apartment, her landlord’s brother, Ryan Grant, was making her rethink her ideals.  However, when Ryan’s children come to stay, can Jo put aside her fears?

Despite the deep issues that the story waded through, it was an easy book to breeze through.  The array of issues the story covered, like anorexia, death, divorce, abandonment was nicely addressed and added a bit of reality to the romance.  The plot was pretty straightforward.  Let’s just say the story is broken into 2 parts – before kids and after hero’s kids.  The first part was fun with Jo and Ryan’s flirtation and fixing up the house.  Then Ryan’s kids show up.  The last half had a more mature tone.  The author did a believable job of transitioning Jo from anti-kid to acceptance.  Meaning that the author didn’t drag it out.  So, the plot moved at a decent pace not to bore you.  Ryan was the hero but didn’t really add to the overall tone of the book.  Jo was the main driver.  The secondary characters were the main drama and added a little color.  Unfortunately, their problems had no closure.  Ryan’s kids did not add any extra drama.  This is clean version of ‘Taking a Chance.’  I don’t know how much it differs from the original story but I appreciate this version
.
All in all, I recommend.  This is not for readers looking for something hot and don’t like children in romances.  With its huge font, easy drama, being clean, and a hodgepodge of characters with their own problems, made ‘Built to Last’ a pleasant story to read on a lazy afternoon.
