Show: Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour
Performers: Cirque du Soleil
Venue: Wells Fargo Center
My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I have to admit I only know Michael Jackson's more well known songs. Am I huge fan? Not really. But after buying the Wii game, I kind of became a superficial fan. Last year, Cirque du Soleil announced that they were going to produce a show, dedicated to Mr. Jackson. Of course, a year is a long time and I totally forgot about it. Just the other day, my friend had a ticket that was available and asked if I wanted to go to the Cirque du Soleil. Of course, I didn't realize this was the MJ show but always wanted to see a performance by Cirque du Soleil. So, I said, "Sure." Upon arriving, that was only when I realize what the show was about. LOL
Now, the show. Unfortunately, we were on the second level of the stadium. For a hockey game, it wouldn't be a problem. Except for the Cirque du Soleil, not so much. You could barely see the people on stage and you couldn't actually get to interact with the performers. There were jumbo screens in the background, but were blocked by the lights and overhang. Plus, the screens only focused on one person. If you are planning to see the show, I highly suggest getting seats as close as possible to the stage. Please take this advice. You will majorly enjoy the show sooooo much better.
Finally, what everyone is waiting for is the performance. The show is about 2.5 hours long with a 20 minute intermission. At the beginning, it was kind of slow to build but as the show progress, the more upbeat and heartier songs were pumped out and ended with a beautiful ending with "Black or White." I found the show similar to a musical with acrobatics thrown in. I'm sorry. They would take a few songs and generally danced MJ's signature moves from his music videos. Not that I didn't like it. All the performers did a wonderful job with such a rousing performance. But I paid expecting a more acrobatic performance . . . For those who have seen a non-tribute show, there is no comparison. However, if you are a big fan of Michael Jackson's music, then you will enjoy this immensely. I'm glad I went just to see what it was all about, but I could have passed this up with no regrets.
