There was always a hesitation when it came to "The Best Girl." I would always pick it out at the bookstore and then, the summary would turn me off. And one day, I finally caved. However, it stayed in my queue for a year before I cracked the cover. After turning the last page, I asked myself, "Why did I wait so long?"
Unlike her fellow students, Farrah Jane Morris was not looking forward to her Christmas break. During the break, her brother was getting married to a socialite and Farrah was his "Best Girl." She would have to deal with fittings, her mother's criticisms on her boyishness, and plan a bachelor party. What was even worse? Conner, her crush from school who was conveniently working at the ski resort that the wedding was being held at, was also there and disliked all society people. What else can Farrah do but fibbed that she was only a nanny. How hard can it be to hold everything together for 2 weeks?
Going by the cute cover, I bet you can guess what's coming - a sweet teen romantic comedy and I'm liking it. An absolute perfect book for those cold winter days. Due to recent events, I have my first (and hopefully last) chance to be a bridesmaid and this book was apropos to my situation. I honestly can relate to Farrah on so many levels (minus the hot guy and being rich). I was relieved to see that the author did not focus on her deception at all. It was used as a casual reminder at regular intervals as humorous breaks when things were going too well for Farrah. The story mainly focused on her relationships with her family and Conner. There was great character interactions and development. I especially looked forward to scenes with Conner and Farrah. Their relationship was absolutely sweet. Conner was a great hero and just the fact he could understand and forgive Farrah so quickly made him so refreshing. After reading romance novels where the hero/heroine have issues of trust after an event like this was a nice change of pace for me. The even-tempo chapters were a breeze to get through. Then suddenly, you were hit with an awesome ending that made the story worth it. The conclusion just sucked you in with good drama.
Would I recommend? Absolutely. It's a delightful, light, sweet read that will capture your heart. The story was written well and Farrah's POV was not annoying in the least. There was a nice balance of humor, romance and drama to keep you turning the pages. If you are looking for something unique, deep or plot-focused, pass this book by. Everyone else, give this book a shot. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the fact that I wouldn't read it again but I'm glad I did once.
