Based on the Frog Prince

Nobleman Percival was mugged while he was strolling through Golden Gate Park, knocking him out and giving him amnesia.  Rescuing a frog from science class, Zoey kissed it.  As the frog jumped into the river, Zoey heard a moan and discover an unconscious man in a boat with webbed feet!  Thinking this was her frog prince, she took him home and hoping that he could be the perfect man for her mother.  But when Percival regained his memories, can their growing love be sustained when reality comes barging in?

I'm a huge fan of Hallmark movies and fairy tales.  So, when I saw "Smooch," I couldn't wait to see it.  I really wanted to like it.  However,  I couldn't get pass the feeling of incredulousness that pervaded the start of the movie.  And believe me, I don't care about whether a movie is possible or not.  But "Smooch" took a little too much liberty with it.  For example, what school would allow their students to kill their own frogs?  Then Percival went missing.  No police.  No alert.  So, I struggle a bit for the first 40 minutes.  But once you get halfway through, the plot transitioned to your usual romantic movie.  It was sweet and endearing.  Overall, the casting choice was pretty spot on.  The acting from Zoey was a little campy at times.  The prince was a mixed bag.  When he was serious, and down to earth, I couldn't help fall in love with him bit by bit.  ON the other hand, when he was goofy, it didn't feel natural.  The mother, Gwen, I like.  She was the one stable element in all this craziness.  She was relateable and her character development was done beautifully.  Her emotions came through.

There is an element of disbelief that might be a slight turn off.  But if you are okay with escapism of this magnitude, it shouldn't be a problem for you.  Good casting with decent acting.  The humor also didn't do it for me either.  But I'm sure there are those who will appreciate it.  Normally, I love a good love story but I had to force myself to finish this one.  I liked the ending even though a couple of things were left unanswered.  Like what happened with his parents?  If you like fairy tales and don't mind campy romantic movies, give this movie a chance.  If you can catch this movie on TV, watch it before purchasing.
